The Cadet Winton is a two-day inter-regional team established in 1988 by Professor Norman Golding in honour of Sir Nicholas Winton MBE.
WHO WAS SIR NICHOLAS WINTON MBE?
Sir Nicholas represented England in 1938 and was selected to fence in the 1940 Olympics, which were cancelled. Sir Nicholas Winton was a 29-year-old stockbroker who in 1939 organized trains out of Prague to secure the safe passage of 669 Jewish children from Czechoslovakia to England at the dawn of World War II. The evacuees, later known as "Winton's Children" knew little about their rescuer until the 1980s, when his work finally came to light.
He was knighted in 2003 and died on 1 st July 2015, at the age of 106. Sir Nicholas had strong links with the Southern Region – he attended Stowe School in Buckinghamshire, and lived in Berkshire.
THE CADET WINTON
The Cadet Winton brings together teams of young fencers from the regions of England and Wales.
The event starts on Saturday morning and continues through to Sunday afternoon. This year the event is being held on:
Saturday 20 th – Sunday 21 st December
at Bromsgrove School, Bromsgrove.
Overnight team accommodation is provided in one of the school boarding houses.
EVENT FORMAT
The event is a 6 weapon ‘team-event’ where the overall scores of ALL the weapon teams are combined to reach the grand total. All matches are fenced as a best of 9 fights (not-relay). The target being 28 fights (or more) to win an ‘overall’ match against another Region. The Region with the most overall inter-region wins will be declared the winner.
There are also prizes awarded to each of winning weapon teams and the top individual fencer overall.
The Cadet Winton is a great opportunity for a young fencer to participate in a fun, competitive and supportive team environment. The event does not carry any ranking points, but is immensely popular with the fencers.
The Cadet Winton is a fantastic opportunity for any young fencer to take part and represent
the Southern Region.
TEAM MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT
The team is accompanied by the Team Manager, Weapons Coaches and Referees. All officials have an Enhanced DBS clearance and at least one official is a qualified First Aider.

b) Returning Performer – returning from a period of absence where the athlete has previously demonstrated an appropriate level of performance.
